Assessing the influencing factors on satisfaction level as a student of statistics department of public university in Bangladesh

Abstract



The satisfaction of being a student of a particular subject depends on various aspects of an institution/university such as universities environment, teachers` teaching technique, teachers` behavior, provided university facilities, student`s background and many more. The purpose of this paper is to assess and determine the influencing factors on satisfaction level as a student of statistics department of public university of Bangladesh. To fulfill the objectives, the data was collected data from the 124 students of public university including Dhaka University, Jahangirnagar University, Comilla University, Khulna University, Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University and Islamic University through a self-administered questionnaire. Univariate, Bi-variate and Multivariate analysis was executed in this research. Among Bi-variate analysis, Chi-square test and from Multivariate analysis, factor analysis was used to explore the significant influencing factors on satisfaction level of students. Analysis showed, more than half (57.3%) of the students are not satisfied being a student of Statistics Department. Among many, Gender (p-value: 0.072), result in under-graduation (p-value: 0.042) and postgraduation (p-value: 0.077), ever failed in academic life (p-value: 0.024), depression (p-value: 0.000) etc. are found as significantly associated with the satisfaction level of students. The study identified four factors: result, satisfaction, study time and depression which accounts for a cumulative proportion of 60.5% of total sample variance of satisfaction level of students. Proper steps such as development of better intervention programs, appropriate support services, facilitate better library system etc. are required for maintaining satisfaction status of students as a student of statistics department of public university of Bangladesh.
