Analysis of Herschel Space Observatory data using missing value techniques

Sushovon Jana, Chandranath Pal

Abstract

In astronomy, observational data often contain missing values for some features or objects. Such unobserved data cause less information to make decisions in different scientific researches. These problems are solved by developing appropriate algorithms and methodologies. In this paper, we have discussed different techniques along with our proposed optimum imputation technique to overcome missing value problem in astronomy and astrophysics. We have compared the performance of different techniques on the basis of Herschel Space Observatory data which contain missing observations. The data consist of size measures and surface brightness of infrared luminous galaxies and Palomar-Green quasars. Optimum imputation technique provides the best complete data set on these astronomical objects. We have performed further analysis using these complete data.
