On the performance of focus measures with application to Multifocused Image Fusion

K. Kannan

Abstract

Focus measure is the numerical value which is high for the focused image and decreases as the image defocuses. To be useful for multifocused image fusion, a typical focus measure should be independent of image content, robust to noise, monotonic to image blur and calculated with minimal computation complexity. In this paper, the performance of twelve focus measures were assessed through various experiments by applying image blur, adding image noise, changing image contrast and image saturation level. Experiments were also conducted on six sets of images to find the best focus measure for multifocused image fusion.
