Abstract

Tropical mangrove forests are rapidly degrading around the world and recent restoration activities are helping them to flourish again. Current study focused on temporal changes in Pichavaram mangrove forest coverage from 1970 to 2014 and seasonal Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) changes in 2013–2014. Topomaps and Landsat series images were used to extract information from satellite images, the major degradation was found between 1970 and 1981. Recent restoration activities are very useful in expanding the forest cover. NDVI of Pichavaram forest was studied for different seasons of 2013–2014 year, and results showed that monsoon season plays a vital role in varying NDVI of forest. Vegetation density determined by NDVI values, was predominantly high and is expected to expand with restoration activities. This study helps to understand the overall mangrove cover changes in past 44 years and NDVI changes with rainfall. NDVI and rainfall correlation coefficient obtained was 0.87. The current status of mangrove forest updates will assist the policy makers to validate present restoration and also to draw a sustainable management plan for future.
