Eco-feminism: Re-investigating the Role of Women in Development and Natural Conservation

Jyoti Kumari, Ajit Kumar Behura, Sarita Kar

Eco-feminist viewpoint maintains that the developmental activities are carried out predominantly by men for deriving maximum economic benefit. This maximization of economic profit not only resulted in the degradation of natural environment but also deprived women to participate in such activities. Subsequently, development came to be seen as the destruction of natural resources as well as the subjugation of women. The sociocultural roles of women constrained them to take part in different fields, other than the domestic chores. The absence of women in the developmental processes and environmental protection activities are viewed as the consequences of dominant patriarchal culture prevailing in the society. This argument is further developed by the eco-feminists as an interconnection between women and nature. The present paper investigates the role of women in the development processes and their concern towards the conservation of natural environment from an eco-feminist perspective with particular reflection on the women-nature connection.
