Application of Integrated Hydrochemical Model and Cluster Analysis in Assessing Groundwater Quality

G. Shyamala, J. Jeyanthi

Abstract

Multivariate statistical tool like factor analysis and cluster analysis were used to analyse uncertainty in ground water quality In the study area, Coimbatore district 60 representative groundwater samples were collected and analysed for 21 physico chemical parameters in the laboratory using APHA (21 edition) procedures. The observed values were compared with water quality standards prescribed by BIS. Parameters included for the study are pH, EC, TDS, TH, iron, ammonia cations include Ca2+,Mg2+, Na+, K+ ,anions are HCO3-,Cl-, SO42-, and PO42-. Statistical analysis revealed skewness is in the order of 5 for iron and Turbidity; Kurtosis is least for TDS and K. Hydrochemical facies denote the hardness of ground water in the study area is high based on calcium and magnesium content. In factor analysis factors varimax rotation was applied to the factors and highest loading of 0.981 was observed for Mg2+. The data is standardised using z score deviation and three clusters are formed in the observed sampling station.
