Variation of Nutrient Level in Soil and Leaf Litter of Selected Tree Species: A Case Study

M. Mishra, A. Banerjee, D. Palit

Abstract

The present investigation reports the level of variation in the nutrient level in the soil and leaf litter of selected plant species at Durgapur Industrial Township, West Bengal, India. Five species – S. robusta, Ficus religiosa, M.indica , A. heterophylle , C. pulcherima were selected for the concerned study. Litter traps were arranged below each selected tree species for collection of litterfall. Soil samples were collected below each species. Soil and fallen litter were analyzed in terms of nutrient content. From the results it appears that higher level of nutrient has significant role for proper mobilization into soil and further improve the soil fertility. Litter pH was found to be a significant factor regulating soil acidification as F. religiosa, S. robusta and C. pulcherima may promote soil acidification of soil. Artocarpus was found to be the most suitable species in terms of higher nutrient content in litter and therefore would enhance the nutrient level of the underneath soil. Such type of screening of suitable species for plantation to improve the soil fertility and health status in terms of natural biogeochemical cycling rate would lead to effective mode of forest management.
