Ecological and geochemical peculiarities of surface water transformation in the area of the enterprise JSC "Apatit” impact

A. E. Isakov, M. A. Chukaeva

Abstract

JSC "Apatite" is one of the largest mining enterprises of the Murmansk region. Apatite-nepheline ore deposits, being mined by the enterprise JSC «Apatit», constitute a part of the Khibiny mountain massif. JSC «Apatit» operating activities are associated with the raw water intake and sewage disposal, characterized by a wide range of pollutants. The study of water bodies, located in the area impacted by JSC «Apatit» , has shown that one of the current issues is an intense molybdenum load, belonging to the group of heavy metals, in mine waters. Molybdenum is leached from the molybdenite in an oxidizing environment with the access of free oxygen. Molybdenite MoS2 is widely disseminated among the minerals composing the Khibiny mountains. It is necessary to take into account that water bodies of high latitudes have a relatively low self-cleaning capacity, it could be predicted the growth in the length and area of already existing fluxes and hydrochemical haloes of pollution. This indicates the need of developing surface water monitoring program and environmental measures that reduce impact on the hydrosphere.
