Belowground carbon accumulation in young Kandelia candel (L.) Blanco plantations in Thai Binh River Mouth,
The carbon-accumulating function of mangroves in connection with stand age on a newly sedimented area was evaluated in this study. Study plots were set up in Kandelia candel (L.) Blanco plantations of different ages in the Thai Binh River Mouth, Northern Vietnam. Soil and root samples were collected. Carbon accumulation in mangrove soils and total belowground carbon down to 1 m depth were estimated. Carbon and nitrogen contents in the soil were higher in the surface layers and decreased with soil depth. Carbon accumulation in the soil increased exponentially with stand age. Total carbon storage down to 100 cm depth ranged from 31 to 85 t C/ha. The carbon accumulation in soil accounted for more than 87% of total accumulation below ground. The results provide a view of mangroves on a newly sedimented area and may be useful in assessing the carbon accumulation in mangroves during the early stages of mangrove reforestation.
