The expected sea-level rise scenarios and its impacts on the Kuwaiti coast and estuarine wetlands
Kuwait is a coastal country with about 500 km total coastal length. Most of the coastal areas are already built with different types of marine infrastructures. Kuwait is investing many million dollars for developing Boubyan and Failaka Island and other coastal areas. It is worth to investigate the probable inundation of these islands and mainland due to different expected SLR scenario. Sea level rise of 0.0 m, 1.0 m, 2.0 m, 3.0 m, 4.0 m and 5.0 m are considered and the extent of inundation of the Boubyan Island, Failaka Island and mainland is obtained. The Global Sea Level Rise Map of Google, developed by Mr. Alex Tingle is used for the estimation of degree of inundation. Almost 75% of the island area will be under water for a SLR of 3.0 m. For 5.0 m SLR, about 90% of the island is under water. It is recommended to consider the degree of inundation for different SLR scenario, plan for long term remedial actions for the sustainable coastal development activities in Kuwait.
