Application of Calcium Carbide for Reduction of Dust Release in Port Complexes

S. Kovshov, A. Erzin, V. Kovshov

Abstract

Dust problem is one of the main ecological problems of a modern large port complex. It is especially urgent while transferring and stacking different rock materials.
In the modern practice the essential measure for dust suppression in ports is irrigation. But under winter conditions of polar and subpolar climate of Russia, such technology is ineffective.

As the main object of research, the article is regarding coal stacks in the largest port complex of the north-west of Russia – Ust-Luga. Basic chemical and energetic features of the stacked coal have been analyzed.
As an alternative to irrigation, the article describes the use of calcium carbide solution. Basic chemical, technical, economical and sanitary features of the developing technology have been analyzed.

The use of calcium carbide solution allows to decrease dust release by 15-20 times. Besides, this technology is aimed at the decrease of regelation of the stacked rock while preserving its energetic properties.

Keywords
