Social Organization and Sex Ratio among Four Species of Himalayan Pheasants during Breeding and Non Breeding Seasons

Mohammad Shah Hussain, Aisha Sultana

Abstract

We collected data on social structure of White crested Kalij Lophura leucomelana, Koklass Pucrasia macrolopha, Himalayan Monal Lophophorus impejanus and Satyr Tragopan Tragopan satyra during premonsoon season and postmonsoon season in Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary (Binsar) and Pindari Reserve forest (Pindari) of the Kumaon Himalaya. Trail monitoring and random search was made for data collection. The overall mean group size for Kalij in Binsar was 2.31 ±1.81 while it was 1.9 ± 1 in Pindari. The sex ratio of Kalij differed between the seasons in Binsar but it did not in Pindari. The mean group size for Koklass in Binsar was 1.43 ± 0.72 while it was 1.7 ± 0.9 in Pindari. The overall mean group size for Himalayan Monal was 1.7 ± 0.9. Overall sex ratio of the species differed significantly between the seasons. The overall mean group size for Satyr was 1.4 ± 0.7. The overall sex ratio of Satyr was 100 males / 100 females but more males were seen during premonsoon season than the postmonsoon season. The ensuing information would have direct management implication for the conservation of these species.
