Effects of Salinity on Certain Cell Wall Bound Proteins and Enzymes in Peanuts Seedlings

Neerja Srivastava

Abstract

On exposure to salinity, significant changes in cytoplasmic proteins are observed. At 75 and 100 mM salt concentration 13 new polypeptides are observed, of which 3 are present at 50mM salt concentration also. Salt exposure causes alteration in cell wall proteins as well. At 50 mM salt concentration new polypeptide of 19 kDa appears. It is not a glycoprotein and is rich in proline and tyrosine. Besides, phenylalanine, glycine and lysine
are also present in significant amounts. Further our results show that activities of wall bound glycosidase, galactosidases, phosphatase decline and those of peroxidases increase on exposure to salt stress.
