Numerical Modeling of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami – A Review

Jinsong Xie, Ioan Nistor, Tad Murty, Tushar Shukla

Abstract

An attempt is made to review some of the numerical models used for the simulation of the wave propagation for the case of the Indian Ocean Tsunami of 26th December 2004. Following this tsunami event, results of several numerical models were made available to the general public (particularly over the Web). These results were mainly in the form of video animations of the propagation of tsunami waves. Here the information on the Web is not reviewed, but the review is rather restricted to the published full-length papers only that appeared in various scientific journals and several books. The
current review is neither exhaustive, nor comprehensive, since there may be other papers which the authors were not able to identify in their search with respect to this particular tsunami event.
