The Investigation of Toxic Waste Burial Polygon Impact on the Atmospheric Air Using Lichenoindication Method (Russia)

M. A. Pashkevich, T. A. Petrova

Abstract

The growth of industry accompanied by the formation and accumulation of various wastes did not correspond to measures reducing their long-time negative environmental impact. According to world statistics, the needs of a modern man for one year are ensured by 20–30 tons of various mineral resources. Only 2–3 % of this amount pass into the final product in the best case. Highly toxic chemical components such as arsenic, mercury, lead, barium, formaldehyde, ammonia, and cyanides are formed, stored and transported in quantities measured in hundreds of trillions of lethal doses. This issue determines the need for monitoring, evaluation and prediction of technogenic impact of toxic wastes in all stages of their treatment.
