An Empirical Investigation of how Sensitive Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Emissions per Capita is to Changes in Livestock Production

Kyriacos Aristotelous

Abstract

Using panel data from 1970 to 2009 for 17 developed and 53 developing countries, this paper investigates empirically how sensitive carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per capita is tolivestock production. The results showthat livestock production has a positive and statistically significant effect on CO2 emissions per capita for both developed and developing counties. The impact of livestock production on CO2 emissions per capita is larger for developed countries. A one percent increase in livestock production leads to a 0.25 and a 0.11 percent increase in CO2 emissions per capita in developed and developing countries respectively.
