Abstract

Sediment related disasters represent a major hazard in the state of Nuevo Leon in Mexico. This area is frequently hit by hurricanes and heavy rainfall which often triggers sediment related disasters causing many environmental damages and death of citizens. The knowledge of rainfall conditions during the occurrence of sediment related disasters is very important in order to arrange an efficient warning system. The aim of this study is to establish critical rainfall for the occurrence of sediment related disasters in Nuevo Leon state, Mexico. Hydrological conditions during sediment related disasters activity are usually triggered by short periods of rainfall accumulation (1 to 3 days) with high average intensity (57 - 236 mm/day).
