Energy Saving Potential in Brick Units: Case Analysis

S. Ganesan, V. Dhulasi Birundha, D. Bose

Abstract

Energy plays a major role in rural industries. Brick units are one of the employment generating rural industries. Brick units are energy intensive in nature. They consume more amount of fuel wood for production. Based on a sample survey of brick units in Srivilliputhur Taluk in Virudhunagar District of Tamil Nadu, a number of energy analyses were conducted to establish relationships between energy consumption and production and Specific Energy Consumption (SEC) and production. Initially, SEC and Energy Intensity (EI) were calculated for all the 153 brick units to compare their efficiencies of energy use. The SEC values ranging from a minimum of 0.3664 to the maximum of 0.4721 were found in the brick units. In order to understand the disparities better, a regression analysis was applied on the variables Energy Consumption (En) and Production (Q) and SEC and Production. This study clearly shows that if the lower production range units moved to higher production range, they enjoy energy efficiency and hence save energy of 22.39 per cent.
