Efficacy of an Insecticide on Some Biochemical Parameters of the Earthworm Eudrilus Eugeniae

S. Logaswamy, K. M. Remia

Abstract

Impact of an organophosphorous insecticide, monocrotophos on certain biochemical parameters of the earthworm, Eudrilus eugeniae were investigated under lethal and sub-lethal toxicity. Median lethal concentration (LC50) of monocrotophos to the earthworm was determined during bioassay study. Under the sublethal toxicity, the experiments were conducted for 15 days with 5 days sampling frequency. The biochemical constituents protein, carbohydrate, lipid and enzymes Glutamate Oxaloacetate Transaminase (GOT), Glutamate Pyruvate Transaminase (GPT) and Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were analysed and all the parameters showed significant alterations. On the whole the insecticide results in degradative metabolic changes which ultimately result in the loss of the nature’s best biological element the earthworm, Eudrilus eugeniae. It is suggested that the random use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides must be avoided for preserving our nature’s best biological element. Instead, vermifertilizers and vermiprotein can be used to enrich our agroecosystem, agriculture and poultry.
