A Comparative Study of Lip region Segmentation in Different Colour Space for Lip reading in Indian Context
Abstract
Lips being the most visible active articulator, its segmentation and tracking are the basic steps for any visual speech recognition and synthesis applications. In this work, the statistical analysis of pixel information inside and outside the neighbourhood of the lip area is carried out in 5 prominent colour spaces on an audio-visual speech database created in the Indian context. The colour space used in this study is RGB, Normalised RGB, HSV, CIE Lab and YCbCr colour space. Based on this statistical analysis, thresholding based lip region segmentation algorithm was implemented. Different colour spaces have shown their strength and weakness in the segmentation of different visible articulators of a talking face.
