Abstract

Detection of thermal anomaly prior to earthquake events has been widely confirmed by researchers since the past decade. Robust satellite approach (RST) is one among the popular approaches of anomaly detection. In this paper, we apply this method on a collection of six years of Moderate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite data, this last represent land surface temperature (LST) images. The applied methodis used to predict 16 April 2003 saravan, Iran, (Mw =7.7) earthquake. The LST variations of anomalous pixelshave been measured from images one month before the event, and we study our correlation with the Robust Estimator of Thermal Infrared Anomalies (RETIRA) index. The analysis of LST variation did not pick up thermal anomaly as the RST approach; the results confirm the effectiveness of robust satellite technique as an approach of earthquakes detection.
