Fuzzy based Roughness Feature for Image Classification and Segmentation

G. Murugeswari, A. Suruliandi

Abstract

Texture analysis is an emerging area in image processing. Visual texture features aim to produce visual impression by representing distinctive image details. In this paper, we propose a fuzzy based approach to extract roughness visual feature for image characterization. This proposed approach extracts significant edge details of an image and computes the roughness value by considering the intensity variation in all directions. The roughness value is then converted into fuzzy roughness value. This feature extraction method is tested for Brodatz database images. The results reveal that Fuzzy based approach leads to consistent improvement comparing with other approaches. The advantage of fuzzy based feature extraction approach has been validated by classification and segmentation using nearest neighbor algorithm.
