Speech Synthesis Component Design for VUI Systems: A Case of Tone Languages

M. E. Ekpenyong

Abstract

This paper concentrates on the development of a tonal framework that is useful for building the synthesis component of Voice User Interface (VUI) systems. We exploit a statistical-parametric approach using hidden Markov modeling (HMM) to achieve speaker-dependent features for an African tone language. The proposed design represents a base-line system and is extensible across other tone languages. Results obtained from two synthesis experiments (with small and large corpora) prove the possibility of a quality VUI system for tone languages. In the future, this research will develop into a supervised adaptation system and advance into an unsupervised adaptation and automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems.

Keywords

Speech synthesis, tone modeling, voice services, hidden Markov models, dialogue systems.
