Liu Guiwen, Wang Lijuan

Abstract

Along with the progress in urbanization, the unbalanced development of public facilities and residential differentiation bring spatial mismatch between public services and the beneficiaries inevitably. Providing an equitable system of public facilities for all residents regardless of their socio-economic status is crucial in developing countries. This study proposes a model integrated with accessibility and residential differentiation to measure the relative spatial equity of education facilities with the assistance of geographical information systems which could be an important guide for the placement and management of public services. The final results show that there is a positive relationship between socio-economic strata and accessibility scores. Thus, the urban planners and local authorities should highlight the need of low-income residents and guide the citizens migrate to the new district or the periphery area through the placement of public facilities to realize the harmonious and sustainable development.
