Improving Carbon Fibers Quality Characteristic by Using Statistical Modeling

S. Raissi, R. Eslami Farsani, A. Shokuhfar, A. Sedghi

Abstract

Carbon fibers have increasing application in modern composite materials due to its especial chemical and mechanical characteristics. In order to lead this valuable material in daily life civilian application, many researches carried out to produce it more economically. In this article the consequences of a pilot study on producing low price carbon fibers based on fully available locally lower price precursors were called Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers reported. Due to variation in mechanical property of produced carbon fibers; by using Plackett-Burman as a well known screening design method in design of experiments (DOE), a verified multivariate nonlinear regression model was achieved and optimum conditions and process setting procedures were attained which showed more than 15.7% improvement in the end product quality specification.
