3D Line Drawing via Gauss Map

Hong Tu, Guohua Geng

Abstract

As an uncomplicated yet effective method of visual transmission, line drawing display meaningful visual clue with sparse lines while omitting relatively unimportant details. This paper presents a method to extract line drawing directly from 3D triangle models through Gauss map. Line drawing produced by the method can include ridges, creases, silhouettes, and suggest contours. By this method, a 3D triangle model is mapped on a Gauss sphere, line drawing is extracted through finding intersections of view direction and arcs on the gauss sphere. When the viewing point is changed, the line drawing can ease produce by the proposed method. A variety of empirical results are submitted to illustrate the efficiency of the new method in extracting high-quality line drawing.

Keywords
