Statistical Analysis of PD Sessions at Fujairah HCT Colleges, with R: How to teach statistical concepts by using R

Christina Apostolopoulou

Abstract

The data, which was collected from the Professional Development sessions that occurred at Higher Colleges of Technology, Fujairah campuses, UAE, in April 2017, is mainly categorical data describing demographic elements and general characteristics of members of the College. Many Faculty members, administrators and employees presented some sessions which were attended by other Faculty members and administrators. Thus, a total of 13 divisions were represented. A total of 41 talks was given. At the beginning of each talk, the attendees were asked to sign a form mentioning their names and departments. These forms are uploaded onto the portal of the College and are accessible to any member of HCT since they may constitute evidence for the performance evaluation of the instructors. Consequently, the demographic elements can also be used for statistical interest. The demographic elements of the attendees and presenters offered some interesting results about general behavior of attendees and some ideas about popular subjects and also decisions to be taken for future PDs. By studying this real world data, we present a convincing way to teach some basic statistical notions by using exclusively the statistical software package R, with no other teaching materials, which can be extended to more complicated statistical techniques.
