Pre or Post-Accident Improvement Measures based on Big Data Analysis: A Study

Abstract



Background/Objectives: This study sought some alternative measures to address the challenges relevant to persistent traffic accidents attributable to continuously increasing vehicle traffic on roads. Specifically, using the Traffic Accident Analysis System (TAAS), this study took an exploratory approach to traffic accidents in Daejeon.
Methods/Statistical analysis: Open source R was used to analyze the data of road accident hot spots and hazardous roads per Gu derived from the TAAS. The road accident hot spots data involved 3 types of traffic accidents, i.e. ① car-to-car ② car-to-person and ③ single car only, fatal crashes as the content of accidents, and five Gus. The hazardous road data was preprocessed using MyGeoPosition to convert the relevant data to the hazardous road counts per Dong, with the most hazardous EPDO (Equivalent Property Damage Only) rating 4 adopted as the reference point. To find out the locations of towing service providers in Daejeon Metropolitan City, we used their addresses on Google Maps. To put into perspective the relevance of the locations of towing service providers, we used R program’s ggmaps function for visualization.
Findings The cluster analysis of the traffic accident hot spots data and towing service providers’ location data indicated Seogu and Yuseonggu were road accident-prone areas with few towing service providers. The correlation analysis of the hazardous road data and accident hot spots data shed light on the correlation between the two. Therefore, based on the results from the foregoing two analyses, we derived the pre-/post-accident improvement measures including the rectification of traffic signal systems and roads as well as towing services in Daejeon City.
Improvements/Applications: The present findings suggest two alternative measures to address the challenges relevant to traffic accidents, i.e. pre-accident and post-accident measures. As the measures to improve the hazardous roads, we suggest expansion of lanes, rectification of traffic signal system, installation of traffic islands, and installation of right-turn-only lanes. In addition, as the measures to improve the towing service, we suggest increasing the number of towing service providers, abolishing the restrictions on boundaries, deregulation to facilitate launching new towing services, and 24/7 standby towing services affiliated with insurance companies.
