Curvelet Based Texture Parameters to Characterize Structural Changes in Jaw Bone with Age and Gender

T. Kalpalatha Reddy, N. Kumaravel

Abstract

The evaluation of jaw bone trabecular structure and quality could be useful for characterization and response of the bone for dental implants other than bone mineral density measured by DXA.The research deals with multiresolution based texture analysis to evaluate changes taking place in the architecture of bone with age and gender. The findings are compared with Hounsfield Units measured from the CT machine at different sites, which is a standard reference. Sixty patients were subjected to clinical CT to obtain the CT number and texture based architectural parameters respectively. Statistical analysis was carried out to determine any possible correlations. Significant correlations (R2 ≥ 0.95) were obtained between Hounsfield units of male and female with co occurrence parameters such as energy, cluster shade, cluster tendency, sum-mean, and standard deviation and Inverse variance. Significant correlations were also discerned for histogram based features and run length based features such as mean, SRE, RLN, GLN, RP and standard deviation. The investigation allows removing the highly correlated features, while keeping the most important ones with respect to their discriminative power.
