Restoring Damaged JPEG Images Made by the Wireless Endoscopic Capsule

Anastasia Antonova, Askar Shayakov, Timur Khabibullin, Anastasia Tolstaya

Abstract

The effectiveness of the software aimed at automated recognition of the pathologies and morphological changes of the digestive tract by the images obtained by the wireless endoscopic capsule depends on the pictures` quality. This article deals with the algorithm for recovering the loss of the data from the part of the image code that encodes the picture itself, not the loss of metadata (supplementary information at the beginning of the entire code). The algorithm allows to reconstruct the images with shifted blocks by returning them to their original place and restoring their original colour. The algorithm was tested on 159 damaged images with different number of the breakdown and the experiment has restored about 90% of distorted frames.

Keywords

Recovery of JPEG images, blocks shift, JPEG markers, downsampling of chrominance.
