Economic Crises and Environmental Sustainability
H. D. Kaya
Abstract
In this study, we examine the impact of financial and economic crises on environmental indicators across the globe. We focus on the two most recent crises periods: the 2008-2009 Global Crisis and the end of the 1990s which include several financial/economic crises around the world. Our results show that the financial/economic crises at the turn of the century has not had a significant impact in the general categories of EPI (i.e. Environmental Performance Index), Environmental Health, and Ecosystem Vitality scores, although a few of the subcomponents are affected significantly. On the other hand, our results show that the 2008-2009 Global Crisis has had a significant impact in all three general categories: EPI, Environmental Health, and Ecosystem Vitality scores are all affected negatively due to the crisis. The Global Crisis has affected most of the subcomponents that are related to Environmental Health, and Ecosystem Vitality. We show evidence of which categories are affected more negatively when a crisis hits. Policymakers should focus on those categories when faced with the prospect of a financial or economic crisis.
