Classification of River Water Quality using Fuzzy Multiplications: A Case of Malaysia

Lazim Abdullah, Syazwani Che Wan

Abstract

In recent years, fuzzy-based methods have been demonstrating to be appropriately addressed the uncertainty and subjectivity in environment assessment problems. Despite this success, the assessment does not seem to be straightforward and most of the methods are exclusively tailored for establishing indices. This paper provides a methodology based on fuzzy multiplications to classify river water quality. The membership functions of water quality parameters are defined prior to applying the knowledge of fuzzy multiplications. The secondary data of river water quality parameters of a river in Malaysia were used as input variables for the method. The degree of membership of water quality parameters involved in the classification process has been dealt with the multi criteria fuzzy multiplications method. The current findings clearly agree with official reports about the water classification in the studied area. This measurement have validated the suitability of the methodology and demonstrated the importance of fuzzy arithmetic operations as an alternative method in developing river water quality assessment.
