Relationship between Quantification Systems of National Accounting and Indicators of Sustainable Development

Fernando González-Laxe, Federico Martín Palmero, Fernanda Miguelez Pose

Abstract

Ecological footprint, as a synthetic indicator of sustainable development, increasingly used at the global, national and local level. Its calculation methodology improves as research progresses and statistical sources become more reliable. Several institutions have been developing multidimensional synthetic indicators of sustainability but, as they are different realities, there are discrepancies between the measurement systems of sustainable development and national accounting, expressed in traditional terms. This document, through statistical and econometric methods, makes a comparison between these two systems and, as a result, it aims at verifying if there is a quantifiable relationship between the basic macromagnitudes of 142 countries and the synthetic indicators of sustainability developed for these same countries.
