Optimization of the lifespan of wireless sensor networks bycoupling a linear model and a multi-agent system

Teube Cyrille Mbainaissem, Bakary Kone, Dethie Dione

Abstract

This article proposes a hybrid approach combining a mixed-integer linear optimization model and a multi-agent system to maximize the lifespan of wireless sensor networks monitoring mobile targets. The mathematical model optimizes sensor activation scheduling across multiple missions, while the multi-agent system dynamically manages interactions between sensors and targets, which are treated as active agents. The results show a significant improvement in the network’s lifespan, thanks to a smarter, more adaptive sensor activation. The proposed approach achieves a 25% reduction in energy consumption compared to traditional methods while maintaining complete coverage of mobile targets.
