A Finite Element Approximation of the 2-Dimensional Burgers’ Equation

Adel N. Boules, Anuradha Priyadarshani

Abstract

An iterative, fixed point scheme for solving the equations resulting from the finite element approximation of Burgers’ equation is presented. One major goal of this work is to prove that, under the assumption of weak convection effects, such a nonlinear system of equations has a unique solution and that the proposed iterative scheme converges to the solution. The results obtained are independent of the particular interpolation functions used to approximate the continuous problem. Numerical examples are included to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.
