Empirical Bayes Approach to Estimate Mean CGPA of University Graduates

Rotimi. K. Ogundeji, Ray.O Okafor

Abstract

Empirical Bayes (EB) approach for parameter estimation has the capacity to yield more precise estimates than methods based on sampling theory. It can give sensible results in situations where sampling theory falters. There are several common empirical Bayes models; in this study we applied the Normal-normal model. The normal-normal model is an analytic model where we choose the normal distribution as both the prior and the likelihood. This study uses Bayes methods of inference to estimate the mean cumulative grade point average of graduates from the various faculties of University of Lagos. Our approach generated results which are of smaller variances compared with variances of sample means. This is further evidenced in narrow widths of the computed confidence intervals. The overall result shows that an average University of Lagos graduate is in second class lower division.
