Direction-guided ACO algorithm for Continuous Edge Extraction in Noise Image

Ming Fu, Shishu Yin, Kaiyu Duan, Ji Ma

Abstract

Traditional edge extracting methods are sensitive to image noise, and discontinuities often occur in extracted edges. This paper presents an edge leading ant colony algorithm to suppress the noise for edge extraction in noise image. Firstly, the image is roughly divided into background and target areas, noise points and edge points by setting a threshold of gray gradient value, put the limited ants on the target points, it can increase the efficiency of the algorithm. Then, using image gray gradient as heuristic information, and put forward the concept of ants transfer direction angle, guide ants search direction by comparing the ant search direction before and after twice. Fuzzy ratio method is utilized to determine the optimum threshold value from updated pheromone matrix. Finally, real edges can be extracted by comparing the value of pheromone matrix with the optimum threshold. Experiment results on noise images show that the method can extract real edges effectively, which keeps the edge details and suppresses the noise at the same time
