Lifetime Optimization Model for Network Coding Technology in Wireless Sensor Networks

Zhang Wei-sheng

Abstract

In energy constrained wireless networks, it’s always required to extend the network lifetime. For network lifetime optimization problem, three circumstances under random topology environments are considered simultaneously, which is no network coding, two-way network coding, and overhearing network coding, respectively. Combining with power control model, number of flows, traffic demand distribution, and initial energy of each node, the network lifetime is evaluated and optimized via interior-point method. Simulation results under different network conditions demonstrate that network coding can improve lifetime gain in case of weak power control, while both this gain and computation overhead magnify with the increase of the number of flows, and both traffic demand distribution and initial energy have little impact on the lifetime. In addition, the results also show that the performance of two-way network coding is similar with that of overhearing network coding, while having lower computation overhead.
