Star Acquisition Algorithm for Star Images with Complicated Backgrounds

Hua Zhang, Xiaoping Jiang, Shaobo Chen

Abstract

The backgrounds in the star image delay the star acquisition process, lead to false stars or lost stars, and enlarge the positional errors of the stars, which are doomed to deteriorate the performance of the star sensor in accuracy and update rate. To extract the fixed stars exactly in the star image with complicated backgrounds, a new star acquisition algorithm is proposed. In the algorithm, to curtail the time spent in processing the backgrounds, the coarse positions of the potential stars are detected, and the frequency filtering preprocess are performed on the sub-images, each of which is centered in a potential star. Then the time-costly preprocessing, threshold and connective analysis processes are performed in the sub-images. The simulations and experiments demonstrate that the algorithm can extract the fixed stars exactly in the star image with complicated backgrounds. It is characteristic of high precision and high speed.
