Color Multifocus Image Fusion Based on a New Pixel Visibility Measure

Hailiang Shi, Ying Li, Xiaopeng Xu, Weiwei Zhao

Abstract

A novel color multifocus image fusion method in spatial domain based on a new pixel visibility measure is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the multi-direction property of Nonsubsampled Contourlet Transform (NSCT) coefficients of the focused and defocused status are analyzed, and then the conception of directional vector is introduced in the measurement of the pixel visibility. Finally, based on the pixel visibility of the corresponding pixels of the source images, a selection principle in spatial domain is put forward. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can not only extract more important useful geometric detail information from the source images, but also effectively avoid the introduction of artificial information. It significantly outperforms the traditional spatial weighted average, the discrete wavelet transform based and NSCT based image fusion methods in terms of both visual quality and objective evaluation.
