Algorithm for Segmentation of Handwritten Chinese Character Strings

Zhihua Cai, Jiangqing Wang, Yangguang Sun

Abstract

Liu algorithm attracts high attention because of its high accuracy in segmentation of Japanese postal address. It has good effect on separating and overlapping characters segmentation as a result of using connected component analysis technology, but connected component analysis is costly and time-consuming; and in most cases, Liu algorithm produces a over segmentation result for connected Chinese characters. Based on deeply study on Liu algorithm and the characteristics of the handwritten Chinese characters, an improved Liu algorithm is proposed. In the improved algorithm, projection profile is used before connected component analysis to overcome the costly and time-consuming shortcoming of connected component analysis; and an improved touching pattern splitting method is proposed for Liu algorithm, firstly detect the connected region by clustering, and then contour analysis is applied to connected region to detect Splitting points. Experimental results show that such method produces a satisfactory segmentation result.
