Effects of Sediment Inflow on Reservoir Network for Flood Control

M. K. A. Abdulrahman, A. A. Mohd Ismailand, Sie Long Kek

Abstract

Maintaining free flow of water and water level in the reservoirs within the network of reservoirs for flood control is of paramount importance in flood control and management. The flow through the network is modelled through nonlinear reservoir model with coupled tank approach. This resulted into systems of nonlinear ordinary differential equation. These equations are normalized about the normal operating heights and the stability of the system is studied through indirect Lyaponouv stability analysis. The stability study is used to determine the normal operating heights of the reservoirs in the network. Information arising from stability analysis is used to investigate the interrelationships between the rain rate, the corresponding normal operating heights, network configuration as well as sediment inflow. The result shows that the networks remain stable as long as the normal operating heights are obtained from catchment parameter. The sediment on the other hand makes a change in normal operating height that will ensure stability.
