Henock Ghebrehiwot Berhe, Kamlesh Kumar Shukla

Abstract

The quality of age data holds a paramount importance in different national plans, policies and estimating important parameters of demography. The objective of this study is to assess the accuracy of age reported by the respondents in three Eritrean surveys and compared their accuracy over period of time. This study is based on the data collected from EDHS (1995-2002) and EPHS2010.The magnitude of age heaping has been calculated using the Whipple’s index and Myers’ blended index. Turner’s hypothetical ranking has also been used to compare the proposed patterns of digit preferences with the reported ages in three surveys. The accuracy of age data was found very rough for EDHS (1995-2002). The third survey (EPHS 2010) data were found considerably improvement over first two surveys.
