Theoretical Foundation and Practical Applications of Modal Analysis Technique for Voltage Stability Analysis

P. R. Telang, P. P. Bedekar

Abstract

This paper discusses the voltage stability analysis of power system using one of the sensitivity based static method known as the modal analysis. The power system Jacobian matrix to determine the eigenvalues have been used in this method. The generator, branch and bus participation factors were found out for standard IEEE 14 bus test system and mechanism of voltage instability could be easily understood from these participation factors. Contribution of this paper is lying in the calculation of V-Q Sensitivities which gives us an insight of proximity of voltage instability with Single Load Infinite Bus system (SLIB) as an example along with having theoretical understanding of why a full Jacobian matrix is not needed in modal analysis.
