An Automated Retinal Vessel Segmentation by Filtering and Reconstruction

A. Elakiya, K.B. Jayanthi

Abstract

The segmentation of the vascular network in the retinal images is an initial step for the Artery/Vein classification and is also an essential step for the calculation of Arteriolar-to-Venular diameter ratio (AVR). This paper presents an automatic approach for the segmentation of retinal blood vessels. This method first extracts the vessel centerline candidates by using the first order derivative filter. The vessel centerline candidates are connected by the region growing. Finally, some of the morphological operators are used to enhance the vessels which are further reconstructed by the morphological reconstruction process. After reconstruction vessel filling is done to segment the vessels from the retinal images.
