Using Remote Sensing and GIS for Comparison and Modification of Drainage Patterns in North of Iraq
Abstract
Digital Elevation Model (DEM) divertive from radar data is the most signifiant way for hydrology calculations and geomorphology studying. STRM (Shuttle Topographic Radar Mission) introduced these data. Findings, such as drainages pattern, aspect, catchments area and slope, are of the most energetic advantage of using DEM. Those drainage patterns depend on barrages and locating dams. Practically, these drainage patterns (streams) are not corresponding to drainage patterns in the image satellite or map. It is not matched with the local survey as well. Thus, there would be a confusing in locating outlet point of dam position or water reservoirs. However, it is made a different in hydrology calculation such as basin length, basin area, spillway position, dam storage and etc. This study focusing to overcome these problems, STRM data were used to detect and map to drainage pattern of Sin Jar Mountain in the north of Iraq. Spatial analysis was carried out to the design of drainage patterns. Also, this paper supports a general studying for harvest water by building a small dam on this valley near the village in the study area.
