Integrating Avatar Technology into Academic Library Operations: Assessing it Necessity and Impact
Abstract
The global ecosystem no doubt, is witnessing as never before, tremendous technological transformations under the auspice of the fifth generation computers that could read and interpret the human intelligence that is now driving the fifth industrial revolution (5IR). The aims are, to ease the methods and approaches at which certain tasks are performed and information is broadcast. Among these global transforming technological inventions is the avatar. This study using explanation research method and qualitative research design, utilized various search engines and websites like Google search, Google Cloud and Research Gate systematically perused relevant literature and assessed the need for libraries and librarians to leverage Avatar technology in service provision and delivery as well as, the associated ethical conundrums and challenges that come with avatars. Based on the review, the inference is that, the gains of integrating avatars in academic libraries exceed the identified challenges. It was recommended inter-alia that the avatar technology is a veritable tool for effective service delivery in academic libraries and there is urgent need for academic librarians to be tutored and regularly updated on the nitty-gritty of avatar representations more so, in the area of library services and should as well, on mastering the intricacies of the technology have their users indoctrinated into the art for optimal appreciation of the benefits of the technology in this new world that is ruled by digitization and also for all round efficient and effective service delivery.
