Quantitative Performance Measurement of Machine Operating Availability for minimizing life-cycle costs

Zahid Hussain

Abstract

The impartial of this study is to discover the machine operating availability using different statistical approaches for reducing life-cycle costs. Since manufacturing industries rely on a high production rate, therefore, the plant must remain working. The breakdowns always create disordering causing a drop in machine availability. For data collection the study work is carried out on a hydraulic press that produces green ceramic tiles. For establishing the statistical analysis, actual data values of the available time were selected and a sample having a size of 35 was considered for analysis. The results obtained from chi-square test of variance confirmed that the machine operating availability is not larger than planned available time. The computational results of chi-square goodness of fit with critical value of 9.48 and rejection region (R) value as 9.48 further established that the proportions of different technical disorders related to the machine operating availability vary from the actual. Testing hypothesis for the production schedule and working shifts using a contingency table produced a critical value of 15.50 and the chi-square value as 335.82 which proved that the machine operating availability is reliant on a specific shift. Machine operating availability analysis will support and increase future plant availability which may deliver continuing savings in operations and repair costs.
