Design of RPL Based Routing Protocol for Indoor Disaster Communication
Background/Objectives: If disasters like fire or gas leak occur indoor, it is possible to cause human and property damage. To reduce the damage, studies on the applications of IoT have been conducted.
Methods/Statistical analysis: Compared to PCs or smartphones, each wireless sensor that senses an indoor environment conditions. The characteristics of the wireless sensor are immobility, limited energy source, and, limited resources of processing ability and memory. A communication protocol of the nodes, RPL(Routing Protocol for Low-Power and Lossy Networks) is commonly utilized nowadays. This study tries to use WSN for detecting an indoor disaster and its routing protocol in order to apply them to an evacuation route support service.
Findings: WSN based IoT network is a type of LLN(Low-Power and Lossy Networks) because the nodes have limited resources of processing ability, memory, and power. Therefore, the network features a low data rate and an unstable link. As a routing protocol standard in the network, there is IPv6 based RPL. WSN for detecting an indoor disaster is based on the RPL. To minimize human damage in an indoor disaster, many applications have actively been studies. However, in most of them, a disaster detection system and an evacuation route guide system are established in different networks. This study uses WSN based disaster detection system to propose RPL based routing protocol and application service for setting up an evacuation route with no need of establishing a separate network.
Improvements/Applications: If an indoor positioning system based on BLE or Li-Fi is combined with the routing protocol proposed in this study, it is possible to apply the combined system to an indoor disaster navigation system.
