The Mediating Role of Psychological Capital in Relationship of Coaches' Sense of Humor with Teamwork Effectiveness from Athletes’ Perspective (Structural Equation Model Analysis)

F. Fahim Devin, D. Farbod

Abstract

A common element of human interaction is humor and hence has an impact on work groups and sport teams (Romero and Cruthirds, 2006). A sport organization like any other organization is a social unit in which achieving the aims and executing the tasks is just possible through participation and collective work (Fahim Devin and Farbod, 2017). In this descriptive - correlative research, the statistical sample consisted of120 student athletes (65 males and 55 females) competing in intercollegiate athletic events in team sports like soccer, volleyball, handball and basketball. Teamwork Effectiveness (TWE) questionnaire expanded by Sterling and Selesnick (1998)was considered in order to measure TWE of employees. Also, we used Thorson and Powell's (1993) Multidimensional Sense of Humor Scale (MSHS) to measure managers' Sense of humor(SH) from employees perspective and Luthans et al. (2006)24 items of Psychological Capital (PC) questionnaire. An internal consistency estimate was calculated for three gadgets and the alpha value for MSHS,PC and TWE were respectively, 0.85 and 0.89, 0.81. The results of the study proposed a positive and significance relationship between SH and PC and their subscales with TWE. PC had a mediating role between SH and TWE. There were not observed differences between males and females athletes regarding the rate of variables. Our research highlights the need for increased attention to PC at the group level, which shapes emergent states and outcomes of TWE, and also more concentration on humor behaviors in sport organizations which have a potential to generate effectiveness and productivity. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation test and structural equation modeling with the help of LISREL software were considered.
